Films tell stories. If we pay attention, so do buildings. Inspired by the many layered stories of the historic Parkway Theater, the design curates an unparalleled movie-going experience. The new SNF Parkway stands as a physical record of the technical and cultural evolution of film from its earliest days to today. The design approach celebrates the accumulated layers of each movie era with intentional contrast to modern interventions. The result is an authentic, rich, vibrant “rescued ruin” that energizes the film complex and anchors its critical location in the heart of the Station North Arts District. Adjacent new construction replaces a former row house with a welcoming public lounge and two new state-of-the-art screening rooms. The striking pure white cube hovers above a transparent base to declare a vibrant new energy and dynamic future for the ever-evolving Parkway Theater.

Federal and state tax credits fostered the renewal of this 1920’s tobacco plant into an innovative medical village. The building achieved LEED Platinum certification, combining numerous sustainable strategies with the highly technological aspects of a medical facility.

NURTURE is a foundation (LLCC) and cultural center dedicated to supporting and cultivating the people and city of Bethlehem Pennsylvania. Situated on Sand Island bounded by the Lehigh River and Canal, the proposed design addresses the site’s identity and access to the River. The design for the Lehigh Living Cultural Center (LLCC) seeks to renew the social and environmental ecologies of the city and its people.

Sagamore Pendry Hotel

Originally opened in 1915, the Rec Pier served as the community center for Fells Point. Restoring the building back to its original condition and giving it new life as a vibrant hotel has put the Rec Pier back as the centerpiece of the neighborhood. The once abandoned south side of Thames Street has come back to life.

This comprehensive theater renovation encompasses 105,000 sf over five floors and includes three performance venues, a re-organization of public space, and a complete overhaul of mechanical and electrical infrastructure. The project introduces state-of-the-art A/V and LED lighting effects to the space and incorporates the bones of the historic building.

Serving as the launch pad for Baltimore’s emerging chefs, the 350-seat, 10,000 sq ft ground-floor space features 10 food stalls, central bar, shared back-of-house support spaces and a wide variety of indoor and outdoor seating. The intent of the project was to transform the 50,000 sq ft vacant auto body-shop garage into a center for the community and a hub for its further economic development.

The redevelopment and preservation of this 1967 affordable senior housing project acts as a catalyst for sustaining the neighborhood by restoring critical functionality to a dilapidated building, while introducing important amenities, re-configuring units to meet the demands of residents and transforming the exterior to give the appearance of a new building.

With context ranging from two to twelve stories, the site’s varied surroundings of institutional buildings, apartments, rowhomes, and retail lies one block from the Johns Hopkins University campus. The design called for continuous street-level retail and restaurants, while modest lobbies provide access to elevated residential and institutional amenities that highlight activity within the building and interact with the community from above.

Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center

The design expresses the importance of traveling northward to escape slavery through an integrated site, building, and exhibit design. Conceived as a series of abstracted forms that can be interpreted in many ways —from the farmstead vernacular of the region to stations along the Underground Railroad —the new Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center immerses visitors in the story of Tubman’s life.

Situated on 3 acres and surrounded by Maryland Environmental Trust land, the Slate House is a contemporary retreat that respects the nature and legacy of the vast and densely wooded site. The new 7,000-square foot building replaces a late 60’s, ranch-style house that was destroyed by fire.

The Chrysalis is a performance stage, park pavilion, and sculpture in Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods in the heart of downtown Columbia, Maryland. As a park pavilion, the Chrysalis primarily serves the public as a destination within the Park. It also acts as a stage for large shows and festivals in concert with the adjacent Merriweather Park Pavilion amphitheater.

The Divided Line

The Divided Line is an interactive space for occupation with engagement in a transformative virtual reality. Designed for Baltimore’s Light City, a collaborative of architects, designers, and artists took to a process of cohesive thinking, designing, and building to execute the project. Inspired by the conceptual meaning of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, this installation was constructed to form a cave-like space as the backdrop for a virtual experience. Those that engaged the VR experience were presented with a “hyper-real” condition—a commentary on the subtle inflections that distort a true circumstance.

2017 Good Design = Good Business Honorable Mention

Takoma Langley Transit Center

Transit agencies conceived the project as a two-phase pedestrian safety and transit operations improvement plan to address the high rate of pedestrian crashes in this area. The center consolidates many bus stops into one central location. The $34.8 million facility replaces a Taco Bell restaurant which was part of a larger still existing shopping center. The design phase included extensive community input. The facility includes a building with a public ticket sales area, public restrooms, operator rooms and mechanical spaces and includes many green features.

Renovations to South Cumberland Branch Library – Allegany County Library System

Located in a small working class Western Maryland town, a community library building has been renovated and transformed into a cool new “place” full of energy, natural daylighting, openness, and warmth. The 9,000 square foot steel framed building was renovated to meet projected program and collection needs in a cost-effective manner.

Excellence in Design Awards Jury

Mark Reddington, FAIA, LMN Architects

mark headshot Mark Reddington, FAIA, is a Partner at LMN Architects in Seattle. He is a leader in the design of public places including the Washington State Convention Center Addition, Vancouver Convention Centre West, Seattle’s Marion Oliver McCaw Hall and Benaroya Hall, Sound Transit University Station, the Tobin Center in San Antonio, the recently completed Voxman School of Music at the University of Iowa, and numerous other University projects across the U.S. Mark’s work has been honored with more than 120 design awards, including national and international awards such as the World Architecture News Sustainable Building of the Year, 6 National AIA Honor Awards, and 2 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Global Awards for Excellence. His work has also been widely published in print, online, and broadcast media, earning widespread acclaim from architecture critics, as well as urban design writers, music and arts experts, technical journals, and civic organizations. Mark received his architectural training at the University of Cincinnati. He is a frequent presenter and awards jury member for universities, civic and professional organizations, and served as Chair for the 2017 AIA Institute Honor Awards for Architecture jury.

Jim Graham, Graham Baba Architects

Jim Web headshot Jim Graham is a founding partner of Seattle-based Graham Baba Architects. The firm is widely recognized for work that showcases the craft of building and that emphasizes the experience of space and place. Graham’s work, and that of the firm, encompasses a wide range of project typologies including commercial design, residences, workplace, and cultural spaces that are found across the United States. Notable projects include the award-winning Melrose Market, an adaptive-reuse project in Seattle, and Chophouse Row (designed in collaboration with SKL Architects), which was a finalist for the Urban Land Institute’s Global Award for Excellence.

Among his firm’s honors and recognition include awards from AIA Seattle, AIA Northwest and Pacific Region, NAIOP, Architizer A+, WAN, and the Chicago Athenaeum, as well as having appeared in a wide range of publications. He regularly serves on design juries, and as a guest critic and lecturer for institutions and organizations including the University of Washington, Washington State University, University of Illinois, NAIOP, and ULI. Graham holds a Master of Architecture degree from the School of Architecture, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Susan Jones, FAIA, atelierjones

Susan Headshot Susan Jones, FAIA, LEED BD+C, is a practicing architect and founder of atelierjones—an architecture, urban and ecodesign firm. Founded in 2003, the firm’s work brings design, research, and community engagement to create projects of reclamation: of forgotten urban sites and buildings, or of waste or scrap to create renewable and beautiful architectural materials. The firm designs new ways of living and working in the city: from homes to urban housing, to commercial buildings, spiritual spaces, and preserves historic structures. Ever researching new sustainable strategies, the firm has done groundbreaking work with cross laminated timber, modular pre-fabricated buildings, vertical hydroponics, urban agriculture, green roofs, bio-fueling stations and greywater upcycling in their projects over the last decade. atelierjones’ work has been recognized by numerous national, regional and local design awards. Susan has been a visiting design professor and critic at numerous universities, and is Affiliate Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Washington. She became a Fellow of the AIA in 2010 and has been working for architects since she was sixteen.

Grace Kim, AIA, Schemata Workshop

Kim, AIA is an architect and co-founding principal of Schemata Workshop, a 16-person architectural practice based in Seattle with a keen focus on building community and social equity. She brings innovative ideas to her projects that merge client goals and sustainability measures, such as urban agriculture, modular construction, and cohousing.

Grace is also the founder of Capitol Hill Urban Cohousing, a collaborative residential community which includes her street level office and a rooftop urban farm. She walks the talk of sustainability, leaving a small ecological footprint while incorporating holistic ideals of social and economic resilience into her daily life. As an internationally recognized expert in cohousing, she was asked to deliver a TED talk this April in Vancouver on cohousing as an antidote to social isolation.

In 2008 Grace was the recipient of the national AIA Young Architects Award, and she is the author of The Survival Guide to Architectural Internship and Career Development. Grace currently serves as the chair of the Seattle Planning Commission.

Rick Mohler, AIA, Mohler + Ghillino Architects

Rick Mohler, AIA, is a practicing architect, educator and activist in Seattle. He is particularly interested in issues related to urbanism, transportation and housing and he pursues these interests through practice, teaching, research and advocacy.

Rick received his BA and Master of Architecture degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. As a principal of Mohler + Ghillino Architects, he has been engaged in residential, commercial and urban design projects that have been recognized in local and regional AIA awards programs, design competitions and numerous publications.

He is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Washington where he teaches design studio and serves as the Graduate Program Coordinator. Students from his design studios have been recognized in national ACSA and regional AIA student design competitions and awards programs over a dozen times in the past five years. Rick co-chairs the AIA Seattle Public Policy Board and is a member of its Board of Directors. He is a 2015-16 Fellow of the UW Runstad Center for Real Estate Studies and a UW faculty representative to the City University Community Advisory Council.

Wendy Pautz, AIA, LMN Architects

wendy headshot Wendy Pautz is a partner and design leader at LMN Architects, a Seattle based multidisciplinary design practice. Over the course of her career Wendy has led the design of both public and private-sector projects across a wide range of typologies and built working relationships with a variety of distinguished collaborators. Her design leadership and integrated approach produce innovative project solutions that interlock the experience of the architecture with the life of the community—celebrating the particular organizational culture within the broader context of contemporary society. Wendy approaches her work with a sense of responsibility to leverage LMN’s depth of experience to the unique parameters of each project through an open process of exploration and discovery. Her work has been widely recognized for its humanistic responsiveness and environmental sensitivity—reinforced by a sophisticated acumen for technical resolution.

Gundula Proksch, University of Washington

gundula headshot Gundula Proksch is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Washington. Her current research focuses on sustainable urban infrastructures, especially those that apply vegetation to manage flows of water, energy and waste. Her book Creating Urban Agricultural Systems investigates the design integration of urban agriculture. She studied at the ETH Zurich and Cornell University. Subsequently, she has over 15 years of experience practicing architecture in New York, London, Vienna, Zurich and currently in Seattle. She has worked with the architecture firms of David Chipperfield, Richard Meier, Field Operations and SOM. Prior to joining the University of Washington, Proksch taught at Parsons The New School for Design in New York.

Rico Quirindongo, AIA, DLR Group

rico headhsot Driven by the desire to have a meaningful impact on both urban and natural landscapes, Rico works with organizations to positively influence communities through design. Since beginning his career in 1996, he has developed a keen awareness of the special requirements needed to make public and non-profit projects a success. Rico has extensive experience and knowledge in the adaptive reuse of existing buildings.

In 2013, Rico became a steering committee member for AIA Sustainable Scan. Rico is also a founding board member of AIA Seattle’s strategic initiative, Design in Public, and helped plan and develop the new Center for Architecture and Design in Seattle. As a council member of the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority, Rico chairs the MarketFront Committee connecting the Market to the Seattle Waterfront.

In 2017, Rico was appointed by the Mayor’s office to serve on two committees: the One Center City Advisory Group and the Key Arena Advisory Panel, both focusing on community development, density, and transportation issues in the City of Seattle downtown core and feeder neighborhoods. Previously, Rico was a President of the American Institute of Architects Seattle Chapter, a mayoral appointment to the Historic Seattle Council, and a founding member of the National Organization of Minority Architects Northwest Chapter. Rico sat on the AIA+2030 national steering committee.
