By supporting the next generation of architects. Our Future Architects Resources (FAR)/Kids in Design programs engage K-12 students with the profession through school visits and career fairs. Adopt-A-School continues to grow, with five architecture firms and Baltimore schools participating and more to come.
We gave $12,800 in scholarships this year to support the next generation of architects through programs like the FAR Scholarship Awards.
By supporting the promotion of the value of architecture. This year’s Doors Open Baltimore was the biggest yet, drawing thousands of people to explore architecture across the city and to meet the people who design and preserve it. 61 buildings across the city opened their doors for visitors to explore. Best of all, the event is completely free! The event continues to grow with the support of our gracious donors.
Tied to Doors Open Baltimore, the annual Robert E. Lewis Lecture continued its mission to bring world class designers to speak in Baltimore with Diane Jones Allen, urban planner, educator, and landscape architect.
By supporting the telling of our architectural history. The BAF’s Dead Architects Society and its publications reveal the works and lives of the region’s great architects, from George Frederick to Poldi Hirsch.
The Early Women of Architecture in Maryland traveling exhibit, unveiling the lives of the first women to practice and contribute to architecture in Maryland, continues to make its way around Maryland, elevating public awareness about the contributions of women to the field and serving as inspiration for future architects.
By supporting programs that give back through design. The BAF participated in its fourth annual Park(ing) Day. Local design firms and organizations constructed parklets in Mount Vernon, inviting visitors to rethink the way streets are used and promoting discussion around the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure.
In 2017, CANstruction will return bigger than ever at a new venue: the BWI Airport. CANstruction is a national event that gathers teams of architects, engineers, contractors, students, and the public to design and build structures made entirely from canned foods within a 10’x10’x10’ space. Afterwards, all the canned goods are donated to the Maryland Food Bank.
