Teach it Forward – Morgan’s Student Designers Teach for a Day for the Baltimore Design School

By Gabriel Kroiz

On Thursday, October 31, 2019, students in Morgan’s Architecture and Environmental Design Program (AREN) teamed up to provide design lessons to 150 6th and 8th graders from the Baltimore Design School (BDS). As part of the BDS mission to educate Baltimore City School students in architecture, fashion, and graphic design, middle school teachers Leah Hucker and Stephanie Cafaro reached out to the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) for help to prepare their students for an upcoming design project with a hands-on lesson from Morgan students in architectural modelmaking.

Student leaders Ryan Eubanks and Monique Robinson of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) student organization respectively, developed the lesson plan for Morgan’s students to teach 150 6th and 8th graders how to safely cut, score and glue materials together to make architectural shapes. Upon arriving at Morgan, the BDS students entered classes of 13-19 students taught by a pair Morgan students including upperclassmen and freshmen instructors. In addition to their work in the classroom, the BDS students were given a tour of the LEED Gold Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies facility and were introduced to Morgan’s history and its crucial role in the history of civil rights in Baltimore and beyond by Professor Dale Green.
