About Society’s Cage: Society’s Cage is a timely interpretive installation born in the aftermath of the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor as our society reckons with institutional racism and white supremacy.
Designed by architects and designers at SmithGroup’s Washington DC office, the installation features a bold interpretive pavilion sculpted to symbolize the historic forces of racialized state violence. The experience educates visitors and functions as a sanctuary to reflect, record and share personal thoughts. It is conceived in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement as a mechanism for building empathy and healing.
Society’s Cage is brought to Baltimore in partnership with the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) as a signature event for their 2020 Free Fall Baltimore festival. The Baltimore chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Baltimore) is supporting the installation’s tenure with programming.
About the Sketch Exhibition: The sketch exhibition is designed to celebrate the pavilion’s arrival in Baltimore, to spread awareness about the project and support the Black Lives Matter movement. Engaging with the pavilion will provide a moving experience. Architects, designers and artists use visual communication to relate their experiences. The exhibition is an opportunity to participate in a wider conversation with others while respecting distancing requirements.
The sketch exhibition is hosted by AIA Baltimore, with open invitation to submit sketches and diagrams of Society’s Cage while it is in Baltimore. Sketches can be any medium, developed digitally or by hand, and will be displayed on social media, on AIA Baltimore’s website, and at The Center for Architecture and Design (dates TBD). Because this is an exhibition and not a competition, no prizes will be awarded. A virtual crit is planned (date TBD) with review and remarks from the design team, Bmore NOMA, the Baltimore chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects, and members of AIA Baltimore’s Urban Design Committee.
Submission and Deadline: Sketches should be submitted digitally by October 31, 2020 and uploaded to this folder. Size should not exceed 1200 dpi in length or width. Please also post your sketch to Instagram with hashtags #societyscage and #aiabaltimore
