President’s Letter: July 2026

Reflections from AIA26

Earlier in June, I traveled to San Diego to represent AIA Baltimore at the AIA Conference on Architecture + Design. The conference offered a meaningful chance to learn from other regions and reinforced that we are all part of one shared profession. Together, we can shape the future of how, why, and for whom we build.

Two themes stood out this year: artificial intelligence and regenerative design. Both will significantly influence how we practice and how we design. Learning more about the ways AI can support our work made me curious about how local firms are approaching and integrating these tools. Regenerative design gives architects an opportunity to create environmentally responsible buildings that support the health and well-being of both people and the planet.

Another topic close to my heart is AIA’s role in supporting architecture as both a profession and a business. This year, AIA reflected that priority in its updated Strategic Plan, and I encourage you to review its initiatives. Through AIAU, AIA National, and AIA Baltimore, a range of programs are being planned to help firms succeed by offering practical learning opportunities on topics often not covered in design school.

As the year progresses and our committees begin planning upcoming events, I expect these three topics—and how they are being implemented in our community—to be part of the conversation. If you would like to help shape and develop programming that would benefit our membership in this area, please contact me or one of our AIA Baltimore staff members.

Next year’s AIA27 conference will be in Philadelphia, and I hope you will be able to attend and take advantage of its many seminars, keynotes, and tours. If you are looking for something sooner, AIA Maryland will host the Future Forward Conference this November. This one-day local event will offer an opportunity to network with your design community, with speakers and sessions to be announced soon by AIA Maryland. Even sooner, the Annual AIA Golf Outing will take place on September 14th, and registration is open.

I have enjoyed meeting the partners and colleagues who have joined us at recent events. If you are looking to expand your design community and make an impact locally, I invite you to join us at one of our upcoming committee meetings or events. Introduce yourself to someone new—you may be surprised by the difference that first step can make. I hope to see you in person soon. If you would like to schedule a call or Zoom meeting to start a conversation, please reach out to me.
