President’s Letter: November 2026

October flew by, bringing opportunities to celebrate the people, ideas, and places that make our design community special. I hope you were able to join us at the Design Awards, where we recognized our community’s creativity and dedication to the built environment. Doors Open also invited our community to explore Baltimore’s architecture and learn more about the spaces that shape our city. Together, these events remind us that architecture connects us—not only as professionals, but as members of a broader community.

That spirit of connection brings me to this month’s focus: Membership Value, the final of our four strategic goals. As a chapter, we are committed to stronger communication, meaningful networking, and opportunities for professional growth throughout the career lifespan. Whether you are a student, an emerging professional, an experienced practitioner, an allied professional, or a member navigating a new chapter in your career, we want AIA Baltimore to be a place where you can find support, contribute your perspective, and feel that you belong.

At our annual Board and Committee retreat at the Design Center, we discussed making AIA Baltimore the “go-to” resource for local design professionals. Membership value goes beyond programs: it means support, shared ideas, and opportunities to shape our profession and community. Our goal is to make these connections meaningful and accessible across members’ interests, career paths, and schedules.

Your membership connects you to national, state, and local AIA support and resources for you and your firm, each offering a distinct perspective. AIA Baltimore brings that value home through programs, conversations, and events shaped by member interests and community needs. We need input from both regular participants and members we have yet to know.

Membership also gives us a collective voice through advocacy. Professional degree recognition and the processes guiding changes to historic buildings may feel distant from our daily work, but they affect our profession and communities. Advocacy asks us to look beyond individual projects to the conditions shaping how we learn, practice, and care for the built environment.

How can you help maximize your membership? There is no single way to be involved, and you do not need to begin with a major commitment. Start with a connection that fits your interests and your schedule.

  1. Participate in a committee. Explore a topic you care about, meet colleagues with shared interests, and bring your experience to the conversation. If you are unsure where to begin, reach out so we can help you find a starting point.
  2. Attend an upcoming event. Use it as an opportunity to learn something new, reconnect with a colleague, or meet someone outside your usual circle.
  3. Share an idea—or tell us what is missing. What would make your membership more useful? What topics would you like us to explore? If timing, format, or another barrier makes participation difficult, let us know. Your feedback can help us make chapter life more relevant and welcoming.

As you consider how you would like to get involved, I hope you will make room for one of these upcoming gatherings.

Thank you for being part of AIA Baltimore. The value of our chapter grows through the knowledge, curiosity, and generosity we share with one another. If you would like to start a conversation by phone or Zoom, please contact me.
