We’ll discuss the wins of 2022\, and the opportunities for 2023. Our conversation will include: \n\nchanges the Climate Solutions Now act made to Maryland’s climate priorities\nideas that were not included in the final Climate Solutions Now act\, and what potential changes could be made in 2023\nother building performance and climate focused bills that will be a priority this session\nthe legislative process and key delegates and senators that may be instrumental in passing climate-focused legislation\n\nAfter the discussion\, stay for a tour of the Phillip Merrill Education Center\, headquarters of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The center\, which opened in 2001\, is one of the world’s most energy-efficient buildings\, incorporating natural elements into a fully functional workplace which has minimal impact on its Bay- and creek-front surroundings. The first building to receive the U.S. Green Building Council’s Platinum rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)\, the center and its sophisticated systems have won international acclaim as a model for energy efficiency\, high performance\, and water conservation. DESCRIPTION:Biophilia is the theory that human beings are innately connected to nature and living organisms. It is a universally human reaction to feel relaxed and more sensory aware in natural spaces. Through evolutionary adaption we now find beauty and calmness in the natural elements that once nourished and protected our remote ancestors. Biophilic design applies cues from nature to the build environment to achieve an enhanced sense of well-being and improved performance. Decades of research studies have proven biophilic design has produced significant user benefits; for example\, shorter hospital stays for patients\, improved cognition in children and restored attention. \nBiophilic design has never been assessed in learning spaces\, until now. Public spaces and facilities are susceptible to accidental as well as deliberate vehicle infringement. Although design professionals must now be increasingly sensitive to site safety and security\, these requirements also provide opportunities to enhance the design and functionality of a space. \nThis course covers the essentials of selecting security bollards that provide adequate protection while adding exceptional aesthetic value to a project. This course first examines the needs of a modern outdoor environment and how an assessment can be completed to evaluate a project’s security needs. Next\, the course will cover common testing standards as well as the necessary foundation engineering options required to meet those standards. Finally\, the course highlights lighting and material options that can be selected to integrate seamlessly into the design of a landscape. \nThis program is presented as part of Maryland ASLA’s Lunchtime Learning series. The successful performance of a masonry wall depends on limiting the amount of water penetration and controlling any water that does enter the wall system. Water penetration resistance and control in brick veneer is the focus of this presentation. The concept behind the ‘brick veneer drainage wall’ is discussed in detail\, as well as\, the proper materials to specify in order to maximize a wall’s water penetration resistance. The various elements and materials which make up a building are in a constant state of motion. All building materials expand and contract due to changes in temperature; some materials move with changes in moisture content. Each building material also changes dimensions due to stress and some materials tend to flow when subjected to sustained loads. These major causes of movement: thermal\, moisture\, deflection and creep\, along with the proper way to control these movements are the focus of this presentation. \nOther topics included in this presentation are — \n\nWorkmanship: What to expect from the mason.\n\n\nAirspaces: Why is the airspace so important and what are the minimum requirements for proper performance.\n\n\nColorless Coatings: When should they be used? This course discusses the various types of features that can be incorporated into anchored brick veneer\, the limits of the prescriptive limits presented in the Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (TMS 402)\, and general detailing concepts to adapt these types of details to anchored brick veneer construction. \nAbout the Speaker\nCortney Fried\, PE\nMs. Fried is an engineer for the Brick Industry Association (BIA)\, where she develops technical reference documents\, participates in codes and standards activities\, as well as assists designers\, owners\, and contractors on technical issues. The presentation will review the steps necessary to achieve licensure to become an architect and other programs to get the most out of your career in architecture. A representative from Maryland’s DLLR Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing department speaking on state-specific requirements for licensure. \n  \nMartin Smith\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED Green Associate \nAssistant Vice President\, Experience + Education \nMartin Smith joined NCARB in 2009 when he was hired to develop and expand NCARB’s outreach efforts to universities and the profession. Today he has an important role in the development and oversight of the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®)\, Architect Licensing Advisors Program\, alternative programs for NCARB Certification\, and additional programs within the Experience + Education directorate. \nSmith has 10 years of architectural design and construction management experience. He has worked for architectural firms in New York City and New Canaan\, CT. His projects varied from single and multi-family residential projects to commercial and university buildings\, with a focus on adaptive re-use and historic preservation projects. \nSmith holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Syracuse University and is licensed to practice architecture in the state of New York. We analyze the role daylight and perceived open space play in shaping cognitive function\, as well as how our psycho-physiology changes in interior environments. \nThe course introduces a new technology that proposes the restorative value of perceived open space in its two essential orientations: perceived zenith and perceived horizon line. The spaces and environments we inhabit are all constructed\, and social constructs are formalized in architecture and urban planning. \nYolande Daniels will discuss Building and Unbuilding—two areas of research and production that explore architecture at multiple scales ranging from the macro-scale of societal patterns that inform the design of objects and spaces\, to the mezzo-scale of institutional buildings and dwellings\, to the micro-scale of the patterning of surfaces. \nJennifer Goold will explore how COVID-19 is prompting cities and city-dwellers the world over to reconsider our relationship to the built environment. Yolande Daniels\, studioSUMO\n \nYolande Daniels is a co-founding principal of the architecture and design practice\, studioSUMO in New York and Los Angeles\, and\, an Assistant Professor in Architecture at USC/University of Southern California. She received architecture degrees from Columbia University and City College\, CUNY. She held the Sarineen chair at Yale University and the Silman Chair at Howard University and taught at Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Columbia University\, Washington University\, The University of Michigan\, and City College. \nYolande is a recipient of the Rome Prize in Architecture and of fellowships from the Mac Dowell Colony and the Independent Study Program of the Whitney American Museum of Art in both studio practice and cultural studies. Her independent design research explores the spatial effects and techniques of power in architecture and urban spaces and has been published in a wide range of anthologies. \nThe practice\, studioSUMO has exhibited work at the Venice Biennale and been the recipient of design awards including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Architecture Award\, Emerging Voices Award\, Design Vanguard Award\, and the League Prize\, and received grants from NYSCA/New York State Council on the Arts and NYFA/New York Foundation for the Arts. \nThe built works of studioSUMO have been recognized for design excellence in architecture awards from the Japan National Design Council\, German National Design Council\, Chicago Athenaeum\, New York City Chapter and New York State AIA\, and\, published in journals globally from Architect/Progressive Architecture\, Architectural Record\, Frame\, Azure in Australia\, bob in South Korea\, Global Architecture/GA and SpaDE/Space Design in Japan. \nJennifer Goold\, Neighborhood Design Center\n \nJennifer Goold joined the Neighborhood  Design Center in 2012 after more than a decade of work in cultural resources management\, historic preservation\, development and planning. At NDC\, she directs all aspects of the center’s operations including staff\, programs\, outreach\, and fundraising. A Baltimore resident since 1993\, she has been involved in many of the city’s largest historic building rehabilitations\, including the American Can Company\, Silo Point and Tide Point. She is passionate about the people\, places\, and culture of the city and equitable access to all it has to offer.  She holds a BS in Interior Design from Indiana University and an MS in Historic Preservation from Columbia University.
