2019 Wrap Up – President’s Message

2019 BAF president Dina Markakis with board member Luis Cardona on the Liberty Harbor East Tour.

This year has been unique and exciting for the Baltimore Architecture Foundation. 2019 marks the 32nd anniversary of the BAF. For over three decades, the BAF has encouraged the public to explore Baltimore architecture—to be mindful of the area’s history, recognize Baltimore’s architectural heritage, and appreciate its design innovations. This year, we brought this message to our largest audience yet. Doors Open Baltimore, the foundation’s signature event spanning two days, drew over 10,000 unique visits and garnered significant media attention.

The BAF continued to increase its visibility through our various annual fundraisers such as the Schamu Golf, Auto Classic and Lawn Party, and the Groundhog Day Party—a mid-winter public celebration of architecture in an interesting venue.

The BAF took the leap from land to sea, as the Baltimore Architecture Boat Tour made its maiden voyage. The tour focused not only on specific and iconic Baltimore buildings, but also educated the attendees about Baltimore’s urban design and the environmental impact of the city’s development on our beloved harbor. Due to its popularity, the tour will be offered again this coming year.

In order to best serve our mission, the Baltimore Architecture Foundation will be moving to the Baltimore Center for Architecture and Design at One Charles Center. This hub will serve as the home for a number of wonderful organizations dedicated to promoting design education in reference to Baltimore’s built environment. We are excited to partner with these organizations in our new home and we are confident our presence here will offer even greater opportunities for public engagement.

We hope you will join us in this new year and volunteer, sponsor and most importantly, celebrate Baltimore’s architecture and design with us!

Sincerely,

Dina Markakis
2019 BAF President
